How to choose an ecommerce platform in the AI era

Start with your business. Then find the AI that makes a difference.

Start with the job, not the AI label

List what you sell, where you sell it and who runs the store. A platform must handle your products, payments, shipping and taxes before its AI features become useful. Choose three tasks you want to make easier, such as drafting product copy or answering operational questions.

Separate native features from add-ons

Ask whether an AI feature is part of the platform, a first-party app or a third-party subscription. Check plan eligibility, usage limits and data access. A short demo is more informative than a long feature list.

Test with your own catalogue

Use the same five products in each trial. Draft descriptions, edit a page, set up a shipping rule and run a test checkout. Check whether generated text invents product details, and how easy it is to review before publishing.

Compare the whole cost

Include the platform plan, payment processing, extensions, email, hosting where relevant and maintenance. Avoid choosing on an introductory rate alone. Confirm renewal terms on the provider website.

Choose a platform you can work with

The best fit is one your team can operate confidently. Keep a record of the tradeoffs and revisit the shortlist as your business changes. Our finder is a starting point; your trial is the deciding evidence.
